Aquaponics

Aquaponics is an emerging agricultural science involving symbiotic, recirculating systems of fish and plant production. This technique uses approximately 80% less water than traditional farming, and eliminates the external fertilizers that are necessary in hydroponics - all while generating a sustainable source of protein that does not deplete natural fishing stocks.

The final phase of GrowHaus renovations will be the construction of a commercial-scale aquaponics system in the far west bay of our facility. Before constructing the sytem itself, we will need to replace the roof and wall panels, install an energy-efficient HVAC system, and seal the space for sanitation and security.
The Aquaponics system will be designed and managed in collaboration with our partners at Colorado Aquaponics, a nationally-recognized design and consultancy firm. The design will take waste from a series of fish tanks, circulate it through a filtration system, and send the nutrient rich water to vertical plant towers and "deep water culture" growing beds for the plants to absorb. The clean water will be recirculated back to the fish tanks, starting the cycle again.
It is estimated that this system will yield over 4,000 pounds of fish and 50,000 plants annually. As in the Hydrofarm, the produce grown will be a balance of community-selected crops for local distribution, as well as high-value crops for sale to restaurants and grocery stores throughout town.
